F1 champion Max Verstappen “Number 2 cannot live in a fairy tale world”[F1-Gate.com]

Two-time F1 world champion Max Verstappen says it’s important for drivers in the number two position to embrace their role.

Throughout F1’s history, some drivers have played a supporting role to their teammates in the race for the world championship. Recent examples include Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas, both of whom assisted his teammates to the championship in 2021.

Valtteri Bottas spent five years at Mercedes from 2017 to 2021, winning four drivers’ titles with team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

Max Verstappen told Viaplay that Valtteri Bottas would not have survived in F1 had he not admitted that he could not overcome the challenges presented by Lewis Hamilton.

“He[the number two driver]gets a fresh start every year, but after a few races he realizes again that it doesn’t happen and he accepts his role,” said Verstappen.

“But he (Bottas) got on the podium, won some races and took pole position.

“But you have to accept that the driver next to you is just a little bit better. That’s fine. It can happen.”

“It’s important that he accepted that. Some drivers can’t do that and it just doesn’t work out.”

“Then they don’t live long. I’m not going to name names. They have to accept their role. They can’t live in a fairy tale world.”

Valtteri Bottas moved to Alfa Romeo this year after spending time at Mercedes F1 and is currently on a multi-year deal.

But Max Verstappen’s father, Jos Verstappen, believes Valtteri Bottas is enduring his final years in F1.

“At some point you realize again that it won’t happen and he understands that,” said Verstappen.

“Bottas has had the opportunity for many years at Mercedes, but now he drives for Alfa Romeo. I think he is in his final stint in F1.

“If you’re part of a championship team, you try to go for it, and after a few races you realize it doesn’t work.”
