Fabio Quartararo’s Quest for a Competitive Bike: Yamaha’s Future in MotoGP

2023-10-11 14:12:38

In March of the previous year, Fabio Quartararo finished second behind Miguel Oliveira (then still on a KTM) in a rainy Indonesia GP. The Yamaha factory rider is cautious before the second MotoGP race weekend in Lombok.

«We are back in Mandalika after a long time and I am happy to be back in Indonesia. The fans here treat me really well and I will – as always – give everything to get a good result,” emphasized the 24-year-old Frenchman. «Last year I was on the podium, hopefully we can achieve another good result this year. But it’s been a while since we last drove here. “That means we have to work well from FP1 to be ready for the practice session,” said Quartararo, looking ahead to the important qualifying session in the fight for direct entry into Q2 on Friday afternoon.

At the MotoGP premiere at the Mandalika International Street Circuit, “El Diablo” was on pole position a year and a half ago – since then he hasn’t managed a pole on the ailing M1.

In an interview with motogp.com the 2021 world champion recently increased the pressure on his employer. «We don’t have much time for a revolution. The future is not in my hands at the moment, but in the hands of Yamaha,” he made it clear. «Of course I would prefer to stay with Yamaha. But if they don’t implement what I want – namely a competitive bike – I will have to consider a change for 2025.

“Sometimes a driver can hide the problems a little, but there comes a moment when the problems are bigger and I can’t do anything,” complained Quartararo. “We have basically had a very similar motorcycle for three years. There are no massive changes and we are not making any improvements. For next year and the future, it is entirely in Yamaha’s hands to build a better motorcycle. Then we’ll see how it goes.”

Regarding the Misano test, the Yamaha factory rider openly stated that it was not a positive test. «I sit on the motorcycle and can say what I feel. We had an hour-long meeting, there were around 20 people, and I told those 20 people straight up that I wasn’t happy and we need to improve. I asked for a lot of things, but I would be happy with half of what I asked for – half for next year and half for 2025.”

Yamaha has to take risks, demanded the Frenchman with a view to 2024. “The others will take a step forward again. If we don’t do that, our situation will be even worse than this year.” But with a stronger mentality it could be a victorious project, Quartararo hasn’t completely given up hope.
