Comedy, Criticism & Consequences: An Interview with Viral Satirist, Akash Pandya
Following Ranveer Allahbadia’s recent controversy surrounding his “joke” on India’s Got Talent, satire expert and comedian Akash Pandya joins Archyde to discuss the fine line between humor and harm, the evolving landscape of comedy in the age of social media, and the importance of responsible expression online.
Akash, you’ve built a career on pushing boundaries with your satire. How do you navigate the risk of offending audiences while still aiming for comedic effect?
It’s a tightrope walk, definitely. The key is to be mindful of your audience and the context of your jokes. Humor is subjective, what one person finds funny another might find offensive. My goal is always to provoke thought and conversation, but I strive to do so in a way that is both insightful and respectful. Sometimes that means stepping back from a joke, even if it’s tempting because it’s edgy.
The internet has become a double-edged sword for comedians. It provides a platform for instant global reach, but also amplifies criticism and backlash. How has this changed the landscape for satire and comedy?
it’s a mixed bag. On the one hand, the internet has democratized comedy, giving a voice to comedians who might not have otherwise had a platform. But at the same time, it’s created a culture of instant judgment and outrage. A single joke can go viral for all the wrong reasons, and the consequences can be severe.
In light of Ranveer Allahbadia’s recent controversy, do you think there are certain lines that comedians should never cross, regardless of the platform or intent?
I think it’s vital for comedians to be aware of the potential impact of their words. There are some topics that are inherently sensitive, and it’s important to approach them with caution and empathy. Ultimately, each comedian has to decide where they draw the line, but I believe in the power of responsible humor that challenges and provokes, but doesn’t seek to intentionally harm or demean.
What advice would you give to aspiring comedians navigating the complex world of online comedy?
Be authentic, be original, be kind.Develop your own voice and perspective, don’t try to be someone you’re not. listen to feedback, but don’t let criticism silence you. And most importantly, remember that words have power. Use them wisely.
