What You Need to Know About the Passing of Fair City Veteran Tom Hopkins

  • The Role: Hopkins played Christy Phelan from 1998 until his character’s exit via a fatal heart attack in 2014.
  • The Career Pivot: Before joining the soap, he left a civil service career to study drama as a mature student at Trinity College Dublin.

From the Civil Service to the Carrigstown Corner Shop

Long before becoming a household name across Ireland, Hopkins walked a very different professional path. The Dublin-born actor spent years working in the civil service before deciding to pivot entirely. He entered Trinity College Dublin as a mature student to study drama.

His transition from student actor to television fixture happened swiftly. While still studying, Hopkins secured a part in a supermarket commercial after attending an open audition. That brief screen appearance caught the attention of the producer of Fair City at the time, who called him in to audition for the show.

That audition secured him the role of Christy Phelan. For 16 years, Hopkins anchored the fictional Dublin suburb of Carrigstown. Operating the corner shop known as Phelan’s alongside his on-screen wife Renee—played by Una Crawford O’Brien—Hopkins was at the heart of the soap.

High-Profile Storylines and Enduring On-Screen Impact

During his tenure from 1998 to 2014, Christy Phelan stood at the center of some of Fair City’s most notable plots. His character’s journey involved a separation from Renee, trysts with local publican Carol Foley, and a series of health struggles that ultimately culminated in his character’s exit following a fatal heart attack.

Even though his character departed the series over a decade ago, the footprint of Phelan remains visible within the show. Una Crawford O’Brien’s character, Renee, continues as a main player in Carrigstown.

Beyond his television work, Hopkins possessed a creative life that stretched back decades. In the 1970s, before his acting career took shape, he performed as a member of a band named The Utopians.
