Fall auctions in New York started with a Mondrian record

With a record price for a work by the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian (1872–1944), the traditional autumn auctions of the large auction houses in New York started.

The work “Composition No. II” from 1930 went to a bidder from Asia for 51 million dollars (around 49 million euros), the auction house Sotheby’s said on Tuesday night (local time). More has never been paid for a work by Mondrian at auction. A total of around 390 million dollars were raised on the opening night.

The autumn auctions should continue all week – and many other records could tumble. Christie’s auction house had already presented last week and auctioned the large art collection of the 2018 Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen for the record sum of around $ 1.6 billion.
