Blockchain tracking platform Whale Alert reports that a hacker has successfully attacked the Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange. However, it turned out to be a false alarm.

The attacker assumed that the company’s system was not properly configured and tried to transfer about half of the total supply of XRP (about $15 billion) to the Bitfinex crypto exchange from an unknown wallet. Paolo Ardoino, the company’s chief technology officer, clarified the situation in a post shared on X – saying that the hacking attempt was unsuccessful.

The “partial payments exploit” occurs when the attacker transfers less than the amount indicated in the “amount” field, assuming that the company’s system is not working properly. With all of this, you want to credit the difference. However, as Ardoino noted, the attack failed because Bitfinex’s system relies on the amount received.

After Ardoino’s post, Whale Alert deleted his post, then in a new post confirmed, that they provided incorrect information and corrected the problem. According to blockchain data, the attacker a Binance he also tried on a crypto exchange, where he also failed.

In the dynamic world of cryptocurrencies, a small mistake, a false alarm, is enough to cause market disturbances in seconds. Whale Alert’s report has repeatedly called our attention to check the authenticity of the information before reacting to the news. Both users and companies need to be alert to potential threats and attacks in order to secure their digital assets.
