BRIEF HISTORY OF THE HOLY CHURCH OF AGIOS GEORGIOS MINTILOGLI, PATRAS

The Holy Church of Agios Georgiou Midiloglio of Patras was built in 1887 during the reign of the Archbishop of Patras and Ilias Damaskinos (of Christopoulos, bishop in the years 1886 – 1892) and according to the architectural plaque it was completed the following year: KING GEORGIOU I BISHOP OF DAMASCUS THE CHURCH OF OUTOS ETHEM MELT ON THE 13TH MAIOU EPISTATOUNDOS 1887 P. LYKOUDI AND APEROTOTHI 26 8VRIOU E.E. UNDER CONTRACTOR IOANNO GADAM EPIROTO. The Epirotian craftsman Ioannis G. Adams, according to the oral testimonies of already sleeping residents, also built some houses of the village, the last of which (probably) suffered irreparable damage during the earthquake of 06/08/2008 and has already been demolished. The Church is built on the panoramic-amphitheatric end of the hill of Mindiloglio, and its foundation proves the definitive settlement of residents since the area was periodically “inhabited place” both before and after the revolution (e.g. in 1828-29, but also in 1851 in which case 35 families are mentioned) and before the revolution it bore the name Neohori or, according to others, Chrysavgi, but in the end the current name prevailed. The inhabitants (farmers and breeders) came by relocation from the mountainous regions of Achaia (and the west), Arcadia, Corinthia and also from Messinia, which peaked at the end of the 19th century and since then Mindilogli has been referred to as “a nice suburb of Patras” connected by rail to Patras through a station of the same name.

The Church of Ag. Georgiou is a three-aisled Basilica with a cruciform gable roof under which there is an internal dome resting on pillars which contains the image of Christ the Almighty. The Church has a pulpit with a scale in its original form, a gynaiconite and two large spires, and it is characterized by K. N. Triantafillou as a “parochial, beautiful and large church with two spires” and dominates the entire area, circling around. On the eastern side of the Church there was the parish Cemetery which has already been relocated since 1955 to the place where it is today – where the Cemetery Church of Ag. Friday. The Church suffered significant damage from the earthquakes of 1965 and 1993, which were gradually restored, and in 1997, the entire interior was stripped of plaster and a reinforcing grid was placed on the masonry, and on the new mortar, the painting of the saints began (1998) to replace the of old paintings and oil paintings of religious art and the related earlier decoration on the walls. Unfortunately, the renovation works of 1997 led to the burial of the original marble floor of the Temple. Earlier (1978) the High Priest’s Throne had been replaced due to wear and tear by the current one, and in 1997 all five crystal chandeliers were replaced. The wooden ceiling of the Church is an imitation of the heavenly dome with relevant coloring and decoration, its last maintenance was done in 1998.

The Church is adorned by the carved kiborio-shaped throne and on it the important architectural icon of the parish priest of Ag. Georgiou and opposite them the shrine with the also great icon of the sept Leipsanos of St. of Dionysios in Zakynthos. But the temple’s pediment is also carved and elaborate. The built iconostasis of the Church was last maintained in 1998, and its despotic icons are from the 1960s, while those of the Dodecahorto are older. Great are the images of the Great High Priest on the Beautiful Gate (curtain) but also the images of the Archangels on the north and south gates of the First Step which, like another architectural image of the Temple with the representation of the Trimorph and below it the representations of St. George, Apostle Andrew and Prophet Helios, have been told on Mount Athos. Also important are the half-doors of the Beautiful Gate with the representations of the First Apostles and the portable icon of the Virgin “of the Salutations”. Above the Holy Table there is the arched gilded dome (1925) on which Saint Artoforion rests.

The archive of the Church has been actively maintained since the beginning of the 20th century and those who go through it can find out reliable information about the life of the Parish.
