Family Law Reform: Cuba Holds Referendum | World | Deshabhimani

HAVANA> A referendum was held in Cuba aimed at abolishing family law. The final result will be published after five days. However, the National Election Commission may give preliminary results on Monday. More than 50 percent of the votes must be received to approve the new family law (Family Code). Cuban President Miguel Díaz Canel said that Cuba is on the path of growth and hopes that the new law will be approved.

Voting for citizens living abroad had already been completed. The new law gives more rights and consideration to women, children and sexual minorities. The law provides permission for same-sex marriage, prohibition of child marriage, protection of children in case of divorce etc. An extensive campaign was conducted from February to April to create awareness about the new law.
