With an increase of more than 100,000,000 consultations compared to 2021, primary health care closed the year in Cuba, of which the Family Physician and Nurse Program is a fundamental axis, whose delivery marked, once again , the Island’s challenges in the face of COVID-19 and other diseases.
In commemoration, yesterday, January 4, of the 39th anniversary of the founding of this program in 1984, the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, sent “a big hug” to the doctors and nurses “who are in the neighborhoods, who always have their offices open to attend to the neighbors” as part of one of the most humane and decisive programs created by Fidel.
By virtue of its comprehensive results in said care front, Cienfuegos hosted the national event for the date, a meeting held at the Serafín Ruiz de Zárate university polyclinic.
During the meeting, the Vice Minister of Public Health, Dr. Reinol Delfín García Moreira, recognized the favorable indicators of the province in the Maternal and Child Care Program, with a mortality rate of 4.3 per thousand live births, and the occurrence of maternal deaths.
The comprehensive work of a professional cadre marked by its stability as part of a renovated network of family care institutions also stands out, as was highlighted at the event, which was attended by the member of the Central Committee and first secretary of the Party in the province, Marydé Fernández Lopez.

The Minister of Public Health, José Angel Portal Miranda, published on social networks, regarding the anniversary, that “many of the results that currently distinguish Cuba in terms of Health are due to the dedication, preparation and perseverance of doctors and nursing professionals who work in clinics and polyclinics throughout the national territory.
“The practice of Cuban Family Medicine has become a fundamental pillar of our national health system and an example for the world,” he added.
As the date coincides with the Day of the Cuban Hygienist-Epidemiologist -in homage to Dr. Juan Guiteras Gener, who in 1906 described the first cases of dengue in our country- the Municipal Assembly of People’s Power conferred the Shield of the City of Cienfuegos on the doctor Francisco Durán García, a very prominent Cuban epidemiologist in the fight against COVID-19.
