Farmers’ Protest in Brussels: Agractie Leading the Charge Against Manure Regulations

The Dutch farmers’ defense group Agratie will lead protests in Brussels on April 16, its vice-president announced on Tuesday. Farmers are opposed to the expiration of a European derogation on the spreading of manure.

An EU derogation rule allows Dutch breeders to spread more manure than is actually allowed. However, according to the European Commission, the Netherlands does not respect the conditions for applying these more flexible rules. According to Agractie, the expiration of the exemption will have major consequences for agricultural operations.

“Several farmers’ defense groups have agreed to come with us to Brussels and protest. We are also calling on other groups to join us. Together we are stronger,” emphasizes Agractie vice-president Alien van Zijtveld.

Agractie also organized a meeting with Virginijus Sinkevicius, European Commissioner for the Environment, on agricultural policy. According to Ms van Zijtveld, the aim is to “start discussing the despair and anger that farmers currently feel about the way manure policy is applied on farms.”
