According to a report, the special task force stormed an apartment and arrested at least one person for the time being. The police cannot confirm the report on the SEK operation, as information from the investigating murder commission will not be published until tomorrow.

Update from May 23, 5:38 p.m: The mayor of Lüdenscheid commented on the homicide and explained why the fair was not canceled and why the rifle parade still took place on Sunday. The information was still unclear at that time, it was not yet certain that shots had been fired and that the 40-year-old had died.

Update from May 22, 5:40 p.m.: The incident at the Steinert fair in Lüdenscheid is actually a homicide. A 40-year-old man was hit by a gun projectile and later died.

As the police and the public prosecutor’s office jointly announced, there was a physical altercation between six people and a 16-year-old boy from Lüdenscheid around 8:30 p.m. on the grounds of the fair. When the boy and his 52-year-old father later wanted to confront the group, the six people fled. Two of them fired shots in the air and in the direction of the father and son with a blank gun and a live weapon. The 40-year-old man from Gummersbach, who was at the exit of the fair at the time, was hit. He later died in hospital from his severe injuries.

Large police operation at the fair in Lüdenscheid – witnesses report shots

According to various witness statements, it also emerged that the shots were fired only a few minutes after one person had collapsed. She collapsed on the street around 9 p.m. after being surrounded by several young people. These are said to have fled in the direction of the nearby Aral gas station, among other things.

It is unclear whether the person who collapsed is the person who died on Saturday evening. This has not yet been confirmed by the police. There was also speculation on social media that a person had died as a result of a crime.

Around 10 p.m. there were a number of patrol cars on the Hohe Steinert, and a large number of officers were on site. One person was checked intensively. There is currently no information about any arrests. The Schützenfest and the fair continued as planned. The last visitors, often heavily intoxicated, did not leave the fairgrounds until well after midnight. At that time, the forensic technicians from the Hagen police headquarters were on their way to Lüdenscheid. The KTU specialists documented the alleged crime scene and went in search of clues.

The opening of the fair on the Hohen Steinert was on Friday was postponed to Saturday due to the storm.
