HOW DID FATHER’S DAY BEGIN?

Most countries celebrate this holiday every third Sunday in June, as part of a tradition that began in the United States. The date was pushed in 1910 by Sonora Smart Doddwho after experiencing firsthand that they also do a good job, decided to pay tribute to them with a date.

Sonora’s inspiration was her father Henry Jackson Smarta farmer who served as a sergeant in the civil war who took it upon himself to take care of her and her 5 siblings, after the death of their mother.

Although Sonora’s proposal to give parents a day was initially rejected, it later began to gain strength among the communities.

At first, the precursor of the date proposed that the celebration be on June 5 in honor of her father’s birthday, but the Spokane Ministerial Alliance of Washington ended up choosing the third Sunday of the sixth month of the year. In this way, the first Father’s Day in history was celebrated on June 19, 1910.

More than 50 years later, in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as the date to celebrate throughout the United States.

In 1972, President Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day to be celebrated on the third Sunday in June each year. The holiday was adopted by other countries, although some do not celebrate on the same date.
