FBI take Thomas Markle into custody on suspicion of abuse material

Thomas Markle, the 82-year-old father of the Duchess of Sussex, was taken into federal custody by the FBI in Florida on suspicion of possessing child sexual abuse material, faz.net reported. Federal agents stormed the Maravida Senior Living facility in Lakeland, Florida, following the discovery of large volumes of illicit content in locations linked to Markle across the Philippines and Mexico.

The Discovery in the Philippines and Mexico

The federal investigation began after Thomas Markle Jr., the 60-year-old half-brother of the Duchess, reported finding storage boxes filled with thousands of images of alleged child abuse inside his father’s former residence in Cebu, where the elder Markle lived from January 2025 to May 2026. Additional material was later discovered in a rented storage unit in Rosarito, Mexico. FAZ noted that Philippine interior minister Jonvic Remulla stated local authorities are also investigating Thomas Markle Jr. as a “person of interest” regarding potential involvement in the offenses.

Thomas Markle Sr. has denied all allegations, calling them lies. However, extradition to the Philippines remains unlikely. Markle has been residing in a Florida rehabilitation facility since the spring, following a leg amputation due to illness. Police face additional legal hurdles during questioning due to a dementia diagnosis and associated cognitive limitations.

British Police Advised the Duchess Against Releasing a Letter

The investigation intersects with past events involving Scotland Yard and the British royal household. In October, British authorities confirmed they began sharing information with the FBI regarding a January 2019 letter from Roslyn Loveless, Thomas Markle Sr.’s first wife, which also contained allegations of abuse against him. The Duchess of Sussex received this letter in January 2019 and reportedly wanted to make the allegations public at the time. According to reports, a protection officer from the Metropolitan Police’s Royal Family Protection Command advised her against going public, stating that police would handle the matter.

Senior royal aides and top police officials, including former Metropolitan Police Cressida Dick and her deputy, were reportedly unaware of the letter’s contents at the time because the officer failed to escalate the document. The Metropolitan Police are currently trying to trace and identify the officer involved.

Statements from the Duchess of Sussex

The Duchess of Sussex addressed the revelations in a statement provided to the US magazine People. “The news that has come to light in the past 24 hours deeply shocks me,” she stated, adding that her thoughts are with any children who may have been harmed. She also addressed the prolonged estrangement from her father and the decision to keep him away from her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. “I hope that it is now understood that despite the distorted narratives in some media over the years, there was only one reason for my distance from my father and my decision to not allow him contact with our children: their protection,” she said.
