FC Barcelona Champions League Ban Threat: UEFA Financial Rules Violation

2023-12-22 14:09:10

According to a media report, FC Barcelona is threatened with a ban from the Champions League.

As “Welt am Sonntag” reports, citing unnamed sources, Barcelona is said to have violated the financial rules of the European Football Union. The top Spanish club is then said to have included unlawful funds in its most recent three-year balance sheet. UEFA did not want to comment on this, and the club initially did not comment either.

According to the newspaper, expenses must be offset by “sales directly attributable to the football business”. The Spanish champions reported a net profit of 304 million euros in September. This is also said to have included proceeds from the sale of marketing and TV rights as well as other sports. However, according to UEFA regulations, this is not permitted for the assessment of the three-year balance sheet.

As the newspaper further writes, citing UEFA circles, a Champions League ban might take place for two to three years from the 2024/2025 season. “The higher the loss, the higher the punishment,” an anonymous informant is quoted as saying.
