Fear of the city. Tunisian migrants terrorize Regensburg

Gangs of thieves have repeatedly robbed a supermarket in broad daylight. On New Year’s Eve, groups of men ran amok in the old town and sexually assaulted a 33-year-old woman. And just a few days ago, two men raped a 29-year-old woman on the lawn next to St. Mary’s Catholic Girls’ School.

In a letter dated Jan. 30, Hans Lindner, principal of St. Mary’s Catholic Grammar School and High School, wrote, according to the paper Bild to parents: “Irrespective of the time of day, your daughters should ideally travel to school in groups and only use well-lit streets.”

Refugees enjoy “cat calling”

Rzesno now looks like it was unthinkable before: police cars are now patrolling the way to school, and the policemen sometimes even accompany the pupils to the entrance of the building.

The park between the girls’ school and the main station is right next to Thurn-Taxis Palace. At first glance, it is striking that there are no benches along the sidewalks, only concrete sidewalls remain. “We removed them all,” explains mayor Gertrud Maltzová-Schwarzfischerová (64, SPD) in an interview for Central Bavarian newspaper.

The Albanian court gave the green light to the agreement with Italy on the placement of migrants

Reason? The benches were literally filled with young men, mostly migrants from Tunisia. They massively harassed women passing by with whistles, shouts with sexual undertones and sometimes even joined the women on their way. The so-called cat calling (inappropriate whistling and shouting at women) reached such proportions that the city had to take action.

Drugs in broad daylight

“Every day we go for a walk in the castle park and for a good half a year we hear more and more people speaking in foreign languages,” said retired parish priest Erhard Schmidt (77) and his sister Elisabeth (71). “You can’t help but see young migrants trying to sell drugs or burying them in the ground where clients can pick them up,” they add.

According to the police, there is a striking number of Tunisians among the suspects in crimes committed in recent weeks and months. After the rape in the park, two Tunisians (20 and 22 years old) ended up in custody. Last year, migrants from the North African country represented the largest group of non-German suspects in crimes committed in the vicinity of the main station.

According to police sources, crime around the station increased massively after the Tunisian refugees were assigned to the center of Regensburg. “This happened because the German authorities distribute asylum seekers according to nationality. From the summer of 2023, a large group of Tunisians were allocated shelter in a refugee accommodation facility near the train station.

“In terms of offences, the figures for 2023 around the station will undoubtedly surpass previous years’ statistics,” a police spokeswoman said.

The deputy wrote to the minister

According to Matthias Gröger, Chief Commissioner and Spokesman of the Police Directorate for the Upper Palatinate, the total number of sexual crimes has also increased compared to previous years and reached a new high in recent years. The exact figure is not yet available as police crime statistics will not be published until March 2024, the paper noted Regensburg News.

“We have assigned a special investigation team to prosecute multiple offenders,” Joachim Herrmann (67, CSU), Bavaria’s interior minister, told Bild.

Peter Aumer (47, CSU), member of the Bundestag, therefore wrote a letter to Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeserová (53, SPD). He calls on her to introduce fast-track procedures for foreign criminals in the Federal Republic: “These criminal asylum seekers harm the acceptance and integration of everyone. It confirms my view that asylum seekers who commit crimes in Germany have lost their right to asylum and must leave our country immediately.”
