Bern, 22.05.2023 – On May 22, 2023, Federal Councilor Karin Keller-Sutter met in Madrid with the First Vice-President of the Spanish Government and Minister for Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Nadia Calviño, as well as the Governor of the Bank of Spain, Pablo Hernández de Cos. The talks focused on current financial and fiscal topics in view of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU.
Federal Councilor Karin Keller-Sutter’s visit took place in the context of Spain’s presidency of the Council of the EU in the second half of 2023. It allowed exchanges on the priorities and positions of the country which will chair the council. It was also an opportunity to deepen bilateral relations in the economic and financial fields.
Federal Councilor Karin Keller-Sutter and Vice President of the Spanish Government Nadia Calviño discussed, among other things, the war in Ukraine and the resulting measures in Switzerland and the EU. They also addressed the issue of the stability of international financial markets. In addition, they discussed the EU banking package, the future market access rules for third countries and the implementation of the minimum taxation of large international business groups provided for by the Organization of economic cooperation and development.
According to Federal Councilor Karin Keller-Sutter, exchanges with Switzerland’s main European partners on issues of financial market stability and cooperation between financial institutions are valuable for both parties. She also considers that cooperation between Switzerland and Spain is good, both bilaterally and multilaterally, for example within the International Monetary Fund.
Spain is Switzerland’s sixth largest trading partner. The volume of trade with this country reaches around 20 billion francs in goods and around 6 billion in services.
