Federal Garden Show (Buga): Increased Attention and Mixed Results for the Hotel and Catering Industry in Mannheim

Three months after the opening of the Federal Garden Show (Buga), the hotel and catering industry in and around Mannheim drew a mixed balance. One is happy about the increased attention for the entire region, said Maik Neuhaus from the German Hotel and Restaurant Association Rhein-Neckar. Such a major event is of course welcome. “We already notice one or the other occupancy in connection with the Buga, but one cannot speak of an explosion in the number of guests.”

Meanwhile, the flower show that started in mid-April and ended on October 8th welcomed the millionth visitor last Sunday – but he wasn’t a typical guest. According to the organizer, the 39-year-old was a musician and performed with school children that evening.

DehogaRepresentative Neuhaus has observed that many people from the metropolitan area, which has a population of more than two million, come for day visits. The number of overnight stays in the cities of Heidelberg and Mannheim as well as in the Rhein-Neckar district totaled almost four million last year. The manager of two hotels in Heidelberg is still hoping for guests from federal states where the holidays have not yet started. “There could still be something.”

The organizers expect a total of two million visits to the Buga and around 200,000 additional overnight stays. So far, Americans have accounted for the most overnight stays, followed by Dutch people.

The second largest city in the southwest after Stuttgart and before Karlsruhe was also recognized in the “Marco Polo” trend travel guide as one of the best destinations for 2023.
