Federal Police seize 300 iPhones illegally brought from Paraguay

A Federal police it’s at IRS seized yesterday 300 iPhones during operation “Sign Off”launched against a criminal organization that maintained a scheme for buying and selling electronic devices without paying taxes.

It is believed that the suspects have moved, in the last year and a half alone, around R$120 million; the products found by the agents, in turn, have an estimated value of R$4 million.

According to the PF, 26 companies were contemplated by the operation, and 5 of them had their activities completely suspended by the courts. In all, 180 police officers and 74 tax auditors and tax analysts were employed by the operation, which carried out 50 search and seizure warrants in Cuiabá (MT), Várzea Grande (MT), Sinop (MT), Alta Floresta (MT), Rondonópolis ( MT), Ribeirão Preto (SP) and Ponta Porã (MS).

Still according to the informationthe seized iPhones had been illegally brought from Paraguay. iPads and MacBooks could also be noticed in advertisements for these companies on social networks such as Facebook and Instagram; their owners, in turn, boasted luxurious lives in their personal profiles.

By analyzing the bank and tax data of the suspects, the authorities discovered that they maintained front companies in the name of oranges to pay for goods purchased abroad. One of the suspects was even arrested for illegally possessing a firearm.

More specifically, those investigated may respond for the crimes of embezzlement (Art. 334, of the Penal Code), criminal organization (Art. 2, caput, of Law nº 12.850/13), currency evasion (Art. 22, sole paragraph, of Law No. 7,492/86) and money laundering (Article 1, caput, of Law No. 9,613/98). If convicted, the suspects could face more than 20 years in prison.
