According to experts, the feeling of insecurity is not only present in the streets. We tell you more.

While some people look forward to the end-of-year holidays, this period presents a disadvantage, particularly for women, since the days are getting shorter. In fact, seven out of ten Belgians sometimes feel in danger when they have to walk the streets in the dark, according to a survey carried out by Axis Communications. The majority of this group is made up of women (82%) and 73% of them are aged 18 to 34.

How do Belgians feel safe?

Belgians use different means to feel more secure. For example, almost 7 in 10 (68%) prefer to take a detour to avoid certain routes. This mainly concerns women (78%). What’s more, 44% of Belgians keep their phone in their hand while walking if they don’t feel safe. This allows them to be able to quickly contact someone if necessary. Significantly, here too, the vast majority concerns women (60%), compared to 27% of men.

The difference between men and women is also evident when it comes to location sharing. 35% of Belgians share their location with friends or family when they are traveling, 40% of women and 29% of men take the time to do so. This makes them feel safer when someone is following their movements.

The feeling of insecurity is not only present in the streets. SNCB employees also report an increase in attacks on public transport. Both train drivers and passengers do not always feel safe. The survey carried out by Axis Communications shows that almost half of Belgians (46%) sometimes feel in danger when traveling alone on public transport.
