That’s not what Felix Magath wanted at all. The Hertha BSC coach is upset. Reason: the second-to-last match day in the Bundesliga.
Bielefeld played on Friday, Hertha lost 2-1 against Silvan Widmers Mainz on Saturday evening, Stuttgart didn’t play Bayern until Sunday. Magath believes that certain teams have advantages in the relegation battle.
At the press conference before the Mainz game, Magath explained: «I was surprised because I only knew for the last few years that the last two matchdays will be played at the same time. It is a mystery to me why this rule, which has proven its worth, has been changed. We never had any discussions about the outcome of the championship because we found this structure. That irritates me too. We’re in the middle of it now, some are playing on Friday night, we’re playing on Saturday and the others on Sunday.”
Magath continues: “Now we are in a situation where it can be assumed again what causes problems again. I took part in games that led to big discussions afterwards.”
Magath draws comparison with “Shame of Gijon”
Then the trainer fox draws a comparison with the “disgrace of Gijon”, the 1982 World Cup game between Germany and Austria, when after the 1-0 for the Germans both teams were further and only pushed the ball back and forth.
«In 1982 there were time-shifted games in the preliminary round at the World Cup. As a result, a game ended the way it had to, so that both teams were satisfied,” said Magath. “The teams were accused of that afterwards, but that was the wrong structure. That’s why I now think it’s wrong that the penultimate matchday was pulled apart and teams are in danger of being influenced by the result.”
The fact that the penultimate match day does not take place at the same time has – as is so often the case – financial reasons. The German Football League DFL structured it differently for better TV marketing.

Bayer Leverkusen secures participation in the next Champions League in the penultimate round of the Bundesliga. The team of the Swiss coach Gerardo Seoane can no longer be pushed out of third place after the 4:2 at Hoffenheim.
Meanwhile, SC Freiburg suffered a setback in the race for the Champions League. Freiburg, who are still fourth for the time being, lost 4-1 to Union Berlin in the duel between the surprise Bundesliga teams at home and now have to hope for slips from Leipzig – either on Sunday at home against Augsburg or in the final round next Saturday in Bielefeld. Just like 1. FC Köln. Steffen Baumgart’s team surprisingly stumbled in the final sprint, but will still play internationally in the coming season. FC lost to VfL Wolfsburg 0-1 (0-1) on the penultimate match day and slipped down to seventh place.
But because TSG Hoffenheim didn’t win against Bayer Leverkusen, they can’t overtake Cologne on the last day of the game. Seventh place will suffice for the Conference League. A place in the Europa League is still possible for FC, but now he has to look at the competition. (wst/SDA)
