Charles Leclerc admits it is a concern that the Ferrari team has yet to resolve the mysterious issues he encountered in qualifying for the Spanish GP that cost him his exit in Q1.
At the beginning of the schedule to determine the starting order of the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit, Leclerc clearly struggled with the lack of trailing edge grip. The car looked quite unstable. In the points circle, he finished in 11th place.
The Monaco driver suspected problems with his car throughout the race weekend, but a series of post-race checks by the Ferrari team found nothing wrong with his SF-23. Leclerc said: “This is the first time in my career that I have encountered such a situation.”
“If you look at the data for all the left corners, this is the part where I struggled, and I brought it up right after qualifying. You can see that I lost about 0.65 to 0.7 seconds in all the left corners, But the real reason has yet to be found.”
“It’s a little worrying, and that’s the part we’re trying to figure out why, because it feels really, really bad.”
Despite introducing a series of upgrades to the car at the Spanish GP, Ferrari has nothing new in store for this weekend’s Canadian GP. So Leclerc is not expecting any miracles at the Gilles Villeneuve track, which is famous for its severe tire wear, but he believes that the Italian powerhouse can analyze more information from the data collected.
Leclerc went on to explain: “Coming to this venue, we didn’t prepare anything new, so I don’t think there will be any miracles. But we need to try to understand how to set up the car to optimize our package.”
“In Spain, we could easily deviate from the optimal operating range in terms of settings and lose a lot of performance because of it. We learned a lot and I believe we will be in a better state this weekend.”
