“Festive Protest Against New Nuclear Fuel Cooling Pool Project in La Hague: Join the Movement”

In La Hague (Manche), opponents of the project for a new nuclear fuel cooling pool again expressed their anger and fears during a festive carnival-like demonstration.

Disguised from head to toe, around fifty opponents of the project for a new nuclear waste pool carried by EDF marched on Saturday May 6 in the city center of La Hague.

A festive atmosphere that contrasts with the message conveyed by the revelers: a firm opposition to making the Hague and the Channel the nuclear dustbin. The atypical gathering was intended to rally more people to their cause.

« I think people are interested in this kind of event, more festive than protest. It attracts attention says Nicolas, a committed local resident.

On the placards and clothing of colorful opponents, one could read anti-nuclear slogans and feel fed up with an increasingly worrying situation in the Channel.

While the basins already installed at La Hague continue to be supplied and should reach saturation by 2030, nearly 6,500 tonnes of spent fuel could be stored by 2034 to the west of the plant Orano, already dedicated to their treatment.

« We are still going to deliver waste to a region where there are already the two Flamanville reactors, plus perhaps the EPR. We are already a region where there is a lot of nuclear power. Enough is enough“ protests Guy Vastel, member of the collective and the association for the control of radioactivity in the West.

The group of residents, who denounce a lack of dialogue and consultation of the population, will soon participate in a project monitoring committee alongside EDF, elected officials and citizens.
