Fewer medical applicants at universities – except in Linz

2023-07-03 10:07:00

15,400 people, slightly fewer than in the previous year, registered for the entrance test for medical studies on July 7 this year. There are again 1,850 study places available at the medical universities of Vienna, Innsbruck and Graz and at the University of Linz. New this time are additional questions in the test section on emotional and social skills – the (including lunch break) approximately eight-hour written test was thus slightly extended. After the record year 2021 with almost 18,000 registrations, the number of applicants (parallel to the otherwise falling number of students) had already fallen to around 16,000 in the previous year. Experience has shown that around 80 percent of those who register actually take the test.

There were declines at all locations except the University of Linz. At the Medical University of Vienna (7537 registrations for 760 places), however, there are still ten applications for a study place, at the Medical University of Innsbruck (3200 registrations for 410 places) there are eight, in Graz (2589 registrations for 370 places) and now also in Linz (2074 for 310 places) seven.

Additional questions from the area “Regulating Emotions”

The entrance test mainly asks about knowledge from medically relevant subjects (above all biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics) and cognitive abilities (including memory, recognizing implications). Ten percent of the test result depends on the text comprehension part of the test, another ten percent on the recognition of emotions and social decision-making part. After a debate about the role of social skills in the admissions process, this part of the test was expanded this time to include additional questions from the area of ”regulating emotions” and the number of questions in this block was increased. However, the weighting of these social-emotional competencies for the overall result remained unchanged.

The high school diploma is not a prerequisite for taking the test – the high school diploma must first be presented as part of the admission process. In human medicine, at least 95 percent of the places at all universities go to candidates from the EU and at least 75 percent to applicants with an Austrian Matura certificate. In dentistry, places are awarded to the applicants with the best test result, regardless of nationality.

In the coming year, the number of places to study medicine should increase by 50 to 1,900. It is planned to increase to 2000 by 2028.
