FFXIV Evercold Expansion: Evangelion and FFVII Remake Collaborations Detailed

During the Fan Festival 2026 in Berlin, Square Enix revealed new details regarding the Evercold expansion for Final Fantasy XIV. Naoki Yoshida outlined upcoming collaborative content with Evangelion and Final Fantasy VII Remake during a press conference.

Engineering a Crossover Across Uncharted Realms

During the Berlin press conference, Naoki Yoshida addressed the upcoming collaboration with Evangelion. He stated that the team is very proud of the upcoming content and placed immense value on crafting a compelling story for fans.

Translating the atmosphere of Evangelion into the established lore of Final Fantasy XIV presented a distinct design hurdle. The universe of Evangelion is completely different from what Final Fantasy XIV offers. To bridge this divide, Square Enix partnered closely with Khara Inc., the rightsholders of Evangelion, ensuring the crossover narrative remains authentic to both franchises.

Yoshida explained the core design challenge: figuring out how to fuse these worlds together and create a fitting story.

Timing the Final Fantasy VII Remake Integration

The integration of Final Fantasy VII Remake elements follows a long-standing design philosophy for the MMORPG. Since the launch of A Realm Reborn, one of the main concepts of Final Fantasy XIV has been to be a kind of “Final Fantasy” theme park. Previous collaborations have brought outfits and characters from other entries in the series, including Noctis and Clive, directly into the game engine.

As a self-professed fan of the Remake series, Yoshida wanted to avoid a half-hearted implementation. However, avoiding a diluted experience meant respecting the production schedules of other internal units at Square Enix.

Timing the collaboration required careful project management. Yoshida noted that he initially approached Naoki Hamaguchi and his team to discuss a crossover. Because the Revelation team is currently in the final phase of development, the timing finally aligned for both divisions to dedicate resources to the crossover.

Both Yoshida and Hamaguchi agreed that this window offers an ideal opportunity to build momentum and excitement across the entire Final Fantasy brand. Development teams from both sides are currently working intensively on the implementation.

The 30-Second Verdict

  • Event Context: Revealed at the Fan Festival 2026 in Berlin.
  • Evangelion Partnership: Developed in close cooperation with Khara Inc. to merge distinct narrative universes.
  • FFVII Remake Coordination: Coordinated with Naoki Hamaguchi’s team, leveraging the final development phase of the Revelation team.
  • Franchise Strategy: Continues the long-standing concept of treating Final Fantasy XIV as a living franchise theme park.
