Fr. Jinu Jacob, Vatican City

On the 19th of June, Pope Francis shared a message on the social media Twitter, quoting the words of the prophet Isaiah that we should be ready to fight against the shameful and demonic sexual violence, and that God is the one who gives respect and love to those who have survived such conflicts.

Here’s the full text of the Twitter message, which was split into two parts:

“The use of rape as a weapon of war is an unfortunately widespread reality. We must condemn this shameful crime. We must never stop saying no to wars and violence.

To survivors of sexual assault in conflict, to every wounded child and adult, I say: When the abuser treats you as an object, the Lord sees your dignity and tells you again and again: “You are precious, honorable and dear to me”. (Isaiah 43:4).

T: (1) Sexual violence used as a weapon of war is unfortunately a widespread reality. We must denounce this shameful crime and never tire of saying no to war, no to violence.

EN: (2) To the survivors of sexual violence in conflicts, to every wounded child and adult, I say: while the violent treat you as objects, the Lord sees your dignity and repeats to you: «You are precious in my eyes, because you are worthy of esteem and I love you” (Is 43:4).

EN: (1) Sexual violence used as a weapon of war is unfortunately a widespread reality. This shameful crime must be denounced. We must never tire of saying no to war, no to violence.

EN: (2) To the survivors of sexual violence due to conflicts, to every injured child and adult, I say: While the violent treat you as objects, the Lord sees your dignity, and says to you: “You are precious in my sight, and honoured, and I love you” (Is 43:4).
