Final Fantasy XIV Online launches for the Nintendo Switch 2 on August 4, 2026, bringing Square Enix’s MMORPG to the hybrid system with a free first month, custom collector’s editions, and dedicated eShop pre-orders already underway.
Square Enix is officially bringing its online multiplayer experience to Nintendo’s new hybrid hardware. Game director Naoki Yoshida confirmed the launch timeline while speaking at Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival 2026 in Berlin, locking in a release date just over a week away for Final Fantasy XIV Online on the Switch 2 eShop.
The arrival on Nintendo hardware follows months of planning, including many months of discussions between Square Enix and Nintendo regarding platform specifics. While players on the Switch 2 will need to purchase an individual subscription, a Nintendo Switch Online subscription will not be required to play.

The Bastion Job and Evolved Combat in Evercold
Beyond the hardware launch, the Berlin Fan Festival served as the debut stage for major updates tied to the upcoming Evercold expansion. Square Enix producer Naoki Yoshida revealed Bastion, Final Fantasy 14 Evercold’s new tank class, during Fan Fest Berlin on Saturday.
Bastion is a main tank, a term introduced as part of FF14’s new “evolved” combat system that designates a tank as defense- and offense-oriented, rather than support-minded. And it’s also the first brand-new class unassociated with any previous Final Fantasy job in FF14.
The Bastion wields two special shields called skyltborg, models of which Yoshida brought on stage during the address while wearing full Bastion garb and quickly discarded thanks to their weight. These heavy shields represent a tradition of martial training on The Fourth (Evercold’s setting) that stretches back generations, originating in a northern archipelago and passed down to those who dedicated their lives to protecting the realm. The Bastion’s shields are shape-changing, aether-powered turrets that function as defensive devices and artillery units.
Realmships, World Design, and the Evercold Setting
At the second of three year-long fan festivals for the Final Fantasy XIV community, the game’s producer and director, Naoki Yoshida, shared new information about the forthcoming Evercold expansion. In the keynote address from Berlin, Germany, we learned more about the world of The Fourth and the massive Realmships that soar the skies over an ice-bound ocean.

Evercold will continue the story of the Godless Realms Saga, which started in Patch 6.1. It follows the conclusion of the Hydaelyn/Zodiark Saga in previous expansions. The setting this time is “The Fourth”, a reflection of the Source world in FFXIV’s universe. This world has fallen into ruin and is ravaged by ever-spreading ice and people have abandoned the land, taking to the sky for refuge by building great airships that became their new homes. Much of your time on the Fourth will take place atop these massive vessels called “Realmships” or The Five Firmaments
where people have sought out survival.
Crossover Raids and What Lies Ahead
Furthermore, it was revealed that the new raid theme will be a collaboration with Final Fantasy VII Remake series called Beyond the Lifestream (also described as the Final Fantasy XIV x Final Fantasy VII Remake Evercold raid series). Series director Naoki Hamaguchi took the stage to share how both teams are deeply involved in the project. Square Enix has also shared trailers for an extended teaser trailer of Evercold, a new job (Bastion), new areas (Hringhorni & Naglfar), a new city (Falgarthr), and the new Final Fantasy XIV x Evangelion crossover.
