Fire Destroys Residence in La Malbaie: Details and Updates

A fire destroyed a residence in 357, rang Sainte-Madeleine, in La Malbaie.

The La Malbaie Fire Safety Department was alerted at 1:15 p.m.

“The property is a total loss. When the call was taken, there was talk of smoke and flames. A malfunction in the chimney might explain what happened. The fire spread quickly throughout the building. A mechanical excavator will help complete the extinguishing. A metal roof makes access difficult,” said Mario Savard, director of the La Malbaie Fire Safety Service.

Around 2:20 p.m., flames were coming out of the front part of the residence. At 2:45 p.m., the Saint-Irénée Fire Department was requested to provide assistance.

The firefighters had to carry water since there is no fire hydrant in this area. It is for this reason, among others, that the Saint-Irénée brigade was requested as reinforcement. “This service was the closest and it has a tank,” explains Chef Savard.

The couple who were in the residence when the fire broke out were assessed by paramedics but were not taken to hospital.

More than 20 firefighters fought this first major fire of the year in the city of La Malbaie.
