Fire in the Notre Dame des Grâces school in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre: a school party was normally planned for this Saturday

A major fire broke out this Saturday morning in a school on Avenue du Chant d’Oiseau, in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, informs us the spokesperson for the Brussels fire brigade. Firefighters immediately rushed to the scene. “3 pumpers, 3 self-ladders”explains Walter Derieuw.

This is the Notre Dame des Grâces school, in which the flames started at the level of the multipurpose room, on the ground floor. “Around 9:50 a.m., a neighbor gave the alert to one of the members of the school’s organizing power. He was warned that there was a fire in the school. This person directly warned the firefighters who went to very quickly on the spot. The fire was quickly brought under control, it was in a multipurpose room facing the street of the avenue du Chant d’oiseau”explains Michaël Rimé, chief of staff of the mayor.

Around 11 a.m., everything was under control. Fortunately, no one was in the building at the time, so there were no injuries. But the smoke spread strongly in the school. The cause of the fire is not yet known. “At the moment, we are talking about an accidental cause. There was a scout party in the evening but around 1 a.m., a member of staff came to close the school. It was empty, everything went well, he There is no problem so the scouts are in no way incriminated. Perhaps a problem of short circuit or other, but we will take stock with the firefighters to find out more”continues the chief of staff of the mayor.

For his part, the spokesperson for the fire department indicates that “lThe fire smoldered overnight before erupting into a fully developed fire.”. He adds that the nearby church is open to serve, if necessary, as a reception center.

A fancy-fair scheduled for this Saturday

In front of the school, parents and children gathered. A fancy-fair was planned for this Saturday, but the party was postponed until spring by the organizing power. “I find myself with my tray of donuts that I brought back for the fancy-fair. I’m a little sad. I’m going to give the tray to the firefighters for the act of bravery… That’s all I can do for now”said a mother.

An external company will have to come and clean up all the soot distributed in the building. The students will therefore probably not find their way back to school on Monday.
