A forest fire in the East Tyrolean municipality of Sillian (Lienz district) was extinguished late on Saturday afternoon after around 24 hours. A fire broke out on 6.5 hectares on Friday afternoon during wood removal work and was fought by 180 firefighters and four helicopters. The cause of the fire remained unclear, police said.

Corresponding investigations are still ongoing. No one was injured in the fire and no houses were affected, it said. There are some residential areas and individual farms on Sillianer Berg, said Franz Brunner, fire department inspector for the Lienz district, to ORF Tirol. “If the fire had developed in the wrong direction, it could have ended badly,” he said. During the night, extinguishing work had to be interrupted for safety reasons. The fire flared up again on Saturday night.

According to Brunner, the operation was difficult due to the many bare areas in East Tyrol’s forests. After violent natural events, the bark beetle spread there. In addition, rising wind could reignite the fire, the district fire inspector told ORF.
