A forest fire in the East Tyrolean municipality of Sillian (Lienz district) was extinguished late on Saturday followingnoon following around 24 hours. A fire broke out on 6.5 hectares on Friday followingnoon during wood removal work and was fought by 180 firefighters and four helicopters. The cause of the fire remained unclear, police said.

Corresponding investigations are still ongoing. No one was injured in the fire and no houses were affected, it said. There are some residential areas and individual farms on Sillianer Berg, said Franz Brunner, fire department inspector for the Lienz district, to ORF Tirol. “If the fire had developed in the wrong direction, it might have ended badly,” he said. During the night, extinguishing work had to be interrupted for safety reasons. The fire flared up once more on Saturday night.

According to Brunner, the operation was difficult due to the many bare areas in East Tyrol’s forests. After violent natural events, the bark beetle spread there. In addition, rising wind might reignite the fire, the district fire inspector told ORF.
