why condoms are still largely neglected among young people

Despite the free provision of certain condoms for young people under 26 since 2023, the measure is little known since only 5% of those concerned say they have asked for it, according to a recent survey.

An essential tool to fight against HIV, but neglected by the youngest. 30 years after its creation, the Sidaction association continues to lead the fight against the AIDS virus, and to raise awareness about means of prevention, including the condom.

Problem: according to a new Ifop survey for Sidaction, young people aged between 15 and 24 do not always have the reflex to use this contraception in their sexual relations.

“64% of young people say they do not systematically use condoms”, underlines Sandrine Fournier, director of the financing center for Sidaction associations, “we are on a fairly worrying trend”.

Several brands of condoms yet reimbursed

In detail, those who say they have multiple non-regular partners, there are 45% who say they do not systematically use a condom during sexual intercourse and 42% who say they have not taken a screening test in the last 12 months. .

However, since January 2023, several brands have been supported for those under 26: Eden, Get Out Covered!, Be Loved, Sure & Smile. Ormelle brand female condoms are also 100% covered for those under 26 years old.

But the observation is clear. According to a study, only 5% of young people say they have asked for it several times at the pharmacy. For Sandrine Fournier, the main reason why young people say they did not use a condom is the fact that they had confidence in their partners: “trust unfortunately does not protect against HIV”.

“A lack of access to information”

Another worrying data: 36% of 15-24 year olds do not know where to go to get tested and 39% of them are unaware of the existence of emergency treatment if a risk has been taken with HIV.

“The fear of HIV is probably less important than at the time so this also leads to a relaxation of practices”, Aymeric de Chezelles, head of the prevention center at Solidarité Sida, “there is also a lack of access to information.”

This lack of awareness also leads to a sad observation: more than a quarter of young people aged 15 to 24 think that an HIV-positive person under treatment could represent a danger to others. Aymeric de Chezelles therefore pleads for more sex education at school.

“Since 2001 the law provides for three sessions of sexuality education per school year. Including primary school this would make 36 sessions, however when we look at the surveys young people say they have received on average 2.7 sessions overall of the course (…) the account is not there”, he laments.

More than 24,000 people in France do not know that they are HIV positive.
