First Android XR Smart Glasses Pre-Orders Start November 12

The Android XR Hardware Era Arrives With November 12 Pre-Orders

After Google first teased its intelligent eyewear initiative in December 2024, the hardware ecosystem built around the Android XR platform is finally moving to commercial pre-orders. During a quarterly earnings call, Warby Parker co-founder and co-CEO Dave Gilboa announced that pre-orders for the companies’ first audio-first smart glasses will open on November 12, with customer deliveries slated for the holiday season.

Splitting Engineering Across Silicon, Software, and Fashion

The device stack splits engineering responsibilities across major tech and fashion brands. Google provides the underlying Android XR software architecture, Samsung manufactures the hardware, which is powered by Qualcomm chips, and design houses handle the physical frames. Unlike upcoming models featuring integrated visual displays, this initial release consists entirely of audio-only frames equipped with a camera, voice control, and a side touchpad. Throughout the development cycle, partners have circulated multiple variants, with Gentle Monster joining Warby Parker on the design side.

Weighing Mid-Range Smartphone Costs Against Regulatory Scrutiny

Despite the confirmed pre-order window, critical details regarding retail pricing remain unannounced. Prospective buyers can currently schedule in-store demonstration appointments via Warby Parker’s official website ahead of the launch. Android Authority noted that while these audio glasses will avoid the $1,800 price tag associated with Samsung’s bulky Galaxy XR headset, they could still command a price point comparable to a decent phone. Meanwhile, the hardware arrives amid a complex global regulatory climate, as governments worldwide increasingly scrutinize and restrict the operational environments for camera-equipped wearables.

Hardwired LED Safeguards and Gemini Integration

The integrated hardware includes physical safety measures designed to address public surveillance concerns. The onboard camera features a hardwired LED indicator that illuminates during recording and automatically terminates video capture if the sensor detects that the indicator light has been physically obstructed. Users will rely on the Gemini assistant for contextual tasks such as city travel, foreign language translation, and general queries during daily operation.

Pre-Orders Begin Next Week for Intelligent Eyewear

Officially, these devices are referred to by all participating parties as Intelligent Eyewear. Dave Gilboa stated on the call, One week from today, on November 12, we’ll begin accepting pre-orders for our first Intelligent Eyewear collection and look forward to delivering customer orders during the holiday season, adding, We can’t wait for customers to experience these remarkable products firsthand. While the pre-order date is fixed, it remains unclear whether holiday delivery means shipping just before Thanksgiving week or going into December.
