Five men stand before the Auckland District Court facing charges after a joint intelligence operation intercepted shipments of cocaine across the city, 1News reported.
Operation Toucan Nabs 150kg in Tauranga Container
The largest of the two seizures unfolded when a shipping container originating from Brazil arrived at the Port of Tauranga. Inside a legitimate consignment of cargo, New Zealand Customs officers discovered 10 duffle bags packed with 150 kilograms of cocaine. Authorities allowed the container to travel onward to Auckland under constant surveillance.

In the early hours of Thursday, detectives from the National Organised Crime Group, backed by specialist police units, moved in as three men allegedly attempted to transfer the illicit cargo from the container into a van. A fourth man, identified by police as a lookout, was arrested nearby. Investigators subsequently executed six search warrants across Auckland, leading to the arrest of a fifth man and the seizure of four high-powered firearms.
Detective Inspector Tom Gollan called the $80 million haul a particularly concerning find that illustrates the link between large-scale drug importations and firearms. The five suspects, aged 29, 31, 32, 36, and 41, face charges of possession of cocaine for supply, possession of firearms, and participation in an organised criminal group.
Contasting Seizures Reveal Recurring Smuggling Routes
The Thursday morning arrests followed a separate drug discovery earlier in the week. Police were called to a South Auckland facility on Tuesday after workers unpacking a shipping container discovered suspicious bags. That shipment weighed 137 kilograms and contained 137 individual bricks of cocaine with an estimated street value of $40 million, alongside two Glock pistols and approximately 200 rounds of ammunition, according to reports by the New Zealand Herald.

While the Tauranga container arrived directly from Brazil, the South Auckland shipment traced a different maritime path, originating in the Netherlands and transiting through Balboa, Panama. Despite the distinct origins, both operations relied on the classic “rip-on, rip-off” smuggling method, where syndicates conceal contraband inside legitimate commercial shipping containers without the knowledge or consent of the exporting or importing companies.
Customs acting investigations manager Nigel Barnes emphasized that the operation’s success hinged on offshore intelligence alerting domestic agencies before the vessel reached New Zealand waters, underscoring the role of international collaboration with bodies like the Federal Police of Brazil.
Police and Customs confirmed that the investigation remains active, with further arrests and additional charges remaining entirely possible as authorities continue dissecting the syndicate’s local network.
