Five wickets for Green, South Africa collapse; Australia get off to a good start in reply

Melbourne: Australia got off to a good start in the Boxing Day Test against South Africa’s first innings score of 189. The Aussies scored 45 runs for the loss of one wicket while stumping on the first day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Usman Khawaja (1) returned. David Warner (32) and Marnus Labuschagne (5) are at the crease. Kagiso Rabada gets the wicket. Earlier, South Africa lost the toss and were all out for 189. Cameron Green took five wickets to destroy the visitors. Only Marco Jansen (59) and Kyle Vereyne (52) shone in the South African line-up.

South Africa had a poor start as the score indicated. With only 67 runs on the scoreboard, they lost five wickets. Dean Elgar (26), Sarel Irvine (18), Tunis De Bruyne (12), Themba Bavuma (1) and Khaya Zondo (5) all disappointed. Then Vereyne-Jansen combined to save South Africa from collapse. Both added 112 runs. But Green gave the visitors the break through when Verein was dismissed. Green sent back Jansen right behind.

Maharaj (2), Kagiso Rabada (4) and Lungi Ngidi (2) made a quick return to keep South Africa’s score below 200. Antich Norje (1) remained unbeaten. Apart from Green, Mitchell Starc took two wickets. Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland have a wicket each. This is the second Test in the three-match series. Australia won the first test. Aussies can clinch the series if they win in Melbourne.
