Flanders Minister for Home Affairs recognizes six new local religious communities

Flanders Minister for Home Affairs Bart Somers (Open Vld) has recognized six new local religious communities. These are two Protestant churches, two Orthodox churches and two mosques, he announced Wednesday during a press conference on Wednesday.

There had been no new recognition of a religious community in Flanders since 2016. The recognition of the last mosque dates back to 2013. The previous Flemish government had introduced a freeze on recognitions, considering that the decree at the time did not contain enough control mechanisms.

During the current legislature, Minister Somers proposed a new recognition order that was supposed to end this freeze.
