Flexible Connections for Belgian Companies: Tariff Benefits and Future Grid Reinforcements

According to tariffs adapted from next year, companies that allow themselves to be partially disconnected when the network is overloaded will benefit from a discount on their bill. This situation is explained by the rapid development of renewable energies and battery parks. But also by the future considerable increase in electricity consumption in Belgium: according to Elia, it will jump by 60% in the next ten years. The number of connection requests therefore increases significantly. According to Tom Demeyer, spokesman for Elia, flexible connections are, in most cases, a temporary solution, pending the completion, by the end of the decade, of grid reinforcements, such as the Ventilus high-voltage lines and the Boucle du Hainaut. “In order to be able to connect potential projects in the meantime, we offer, temporarily or not, a connection with flexible access. In this way, we avoid having to refuse access to the network outright,” he explains. For injections into the network, it is above all the coastal region and the area around Liège that reach their limits. With regard to direct debits, the restrictions mainly target Hainaut and northern Limburg. (Belga)
