Speaking on the rollout, Governor DeSantis emphasized the necessity of equipping younger generations with a rigorous understanding of political history. “As the new school year gets underway, Florida’s new History of Communism education standards ensure that students receive comprehensive instruction on the historical reality of communism,” Governor DeSantis stated, according to the official release reported by Mirage News. “Thanks to legislation I signed, all high school students are now required to learn about the damage that this ideology has caused around the world and the experiences of those who suffered under communist regimes.”
Commissioner of Education Henry Mack noted that studying these historical atrocities helps students recognize the dangers of concentrated government power. “By studying the atrocities committed under communist regimes, including political oppression, forced migration, famine, and the suppression of basic freedoms, students gain a deeper understanding of the consequences of concentrated government power and the loss of individual liberty,” Mack said.

Florida’s path toward these sweeping standards has unfolded over several legislative sessions. In 2022, Governor DeSantis signed House Bill 395, establishing Victims of Communism Day and mandating at least 45 minutes of instruction on the human toll exacted by these governments. That baseline expanded significantly when the governor signed Senate Bill 1264 in 2024, broadening educational requirements regarding the global impact of communism.
Building on those legislative markers, the State Board of Education approved revised standards in November 2025. These updates incorporate contemporary geopolitics, including the indictment of Raúl Castro and the collapse of the Maduro regime in Venezuela. By integrating these real-world examples, state officials aim to demonstrate that the consequences of communist governance remain an active historical and political force.
