Fluxys c-grid: A Leading CO2 Network Operator for Transitioning to a Low-Carbon Industry

2023-09-20 06:24:12

Fluxys Belgium, the subsidiary of the port of Antwerp-Bruges Pipelink, the holding company Socofe and the Federal Participation and Investment Company (SFPIM) are joining forces within “Fluxys c-grid” to create a CO2 network operator, announced the four actors on Wednesday. This new network will aim to support industries in their efforts to transition to a low-carbon industry.

“Fluxys c-grid” will connect the CO2 network to export infrastructure and the infrastructure of neighboring countries, so that volumes can transit via a CO2 backbone.

“Carbon capture and utilization/storage (CCUS) technology is essential to enable industry to achieve its transition goals, particularly in hard-to-decarbonize sectors such as steel production, cement and lime as well as petrochemicals (…). To best serve the industry, our goal is to connect the CO2 network to export infrastructure and the infrastructure of neighboring countries, so that volumes can transit via a CO2 backbone,” explain the four companies.

“Fluxys c-grid” will constitute a subsidiary of Fluxys Belgium, which will hold a majority share of 77.5%. The partners Pipelink and Socofe will each own 10%, while the SFPIM will support the new operator with 2.5%.

“The launch of Fluxys c-grid fits perfectly with our ambition to offer Belgian industry and neighboring countries the capacity to transport 30 megatons of CO2 per year by 2030. To ensure that the main industrial centers of our regions and neighboring countries have access to our CO2 backbone, we have a solid plan phased until 2030,” underlined Fluxys CEO Pascal De Buck.
