“I’ve just come back from vacation, I’m doing some shopping, I haven’t bought much and the bill is over 50 euros, it’s not possible. » The feverish reaction of a customer questioning the employee at the checkout of a Franprix store, boulevard Saint-Marcel in Paris, is now commonplace.

It is easily explained by looking at the data published on Thursday August 24 by the panelist Circana. In August, food prices remained at their highest. They have generally not changed compared to July.

This stabilization proves it: inflation in the prices of everyday consumer products on supermarket shelves has still not decelerated. Of course, if the comparison is made with August 2022, the rate of price increases seems to be slowing down. It reached 12.4% against 13.6% in July over one year. But this settling is to be put into perspective. By placing the cursor a year earlier, in August 2021, food prices jumped 21.3%, a record increase.

“Increases in animal protein”

The trend is further illustrated by scrutinizing the typical shopping basket concocted by Circana for The world. Worth just over 100 euros at the end of 2021, this trolley, made up of products from national brands, private labels and first prices, now costs 126 euros. That is 1 cent more than in July, which means that the bill has almost stabilized. Here again, comparing over one year, the increase seems to have moderated to 10.2%. But, since September 2021, when the first basket was put online, the increase has been almost 23%.

Among the products posting a discount over the past month stand out yoghurts, the price of which fell by 6.5%, coffee (–1.9%), pasta shells (–1.4%) , butter (–1%) or flour (–0.7%). But others, on the contrary, see their prices increase further. Like frozen fish (+ 3.1%), canned tuna (+ 2.4%), ham (+ 1.9%) or ground beef (+ 1.2%). ” Still significant increases, however, especially in animal proteinunderlines Emily Mayer, director of Circana, before adding: In the drop in price of pasta and yogurt, we can see the efforts of manufacturers requested by the government. »

Indeed, for months, the Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, has multiplied meetings with distributors and manufacturers to try to reverse the trend. The objective: to bring down food inflation, on an unprecedented scale, to restore purchasing power to the French. Anti-inflation baskets, with a selection of first-price products at reduced prices, were set up by major retailers in the spring.
