(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Bae Jin-nam = Professional soccer K League 1 Incheon United’s central defender Harrison Delbridge (30) has been selected for the Australian national team for the first time in his life.

The Australian Football Association announced on its website on the 14th that the list of 31 players selected by coach Graham Arnold for two friendly matches against New Zealand this month was announced.

At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which starts in November, Australia, which is in Group D, will play against New Zealand at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Australia on the 22nd and three days later at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand on the 25th.

Delbridge is also included in the roster for Australia’s national team for this friendly match.

This is the first time Delbridge has been selected for the Australian national team. Delbridge has never played for any age group.

Ahead of the announcement of the roster, the Australian national team coach recently visited Korea to watch a K-League match in person, and it is known that he watched Delbridge and Alexander Ian Grant (Pohang Steelers), two central defenders from Australia.

In the end, Delbridge was chosen among the two.

Born in Sydney, Australia, but learned soccer in the United States, Delbridge made his professional debut with Sacramento Republic in the United States in 2014. After playing Portland Timbers 2 and FC Cincinnati, he signed with Melbourne City in November 2017 and entered the Australian A-League stage.

Delbridge, who also contributed to the team’s regular league runner-up in the 2019-2020 season at Melbourne City, advanced to the K League 1 in January 2021 wearing the Incheon uniform.

Delbridge, who was evaluated as having speed and foot skills as well as the ability to fight the ball in the air as a tall center back with a height of 190 cm, played 34 games in K League 1 last year, scoring 1 goal and 2 assists. He also played 27 games and provided 1 assist this year, contributing to Incheon’s progress to Final A.

Delbridge, who joined the national team for the first time, dreams of participating in the World Cup.

“This call is our last chance to join the squad ahead of the World Cup in Qatar in November,” Arnold said on the Australian Association’s website. “All players are competing for the final entries to be announced in early November. This camp will give you a unique opportunity to select new players.”
