For a better sleep.. How does your brain stop thinking at night?

Many people face the problem of restful and deep sleep, as soon as you lie in bed, thoughts begin to come to you, which are usually accompanied by anxiety about a career or the future, which makes resting your mind impossible.

To get rid of nighttime anxiety, you may need to reset your relationship with sleep, so that falling asleep becomes normal rather than more like a battle.

Dr. Jade Wu, a sleep medicine specialist, put together a set of tips in her new book, “Hello Sleep: The Science and Art of Overcoming Insomnia Without Medication,” to help you achieve a healthy sleep routine.

Here are some of the tips that Dr. Wu spoke about in an interview with a magazine Forbes:

  • Behavioral therapies for insomnia are more effective than medication and have fewer risks and side effects.
  • One of the common myths about sleep is that everyone needs 8 hours a night, but the fact of the matter is that the amount of sleep varies between people according to their genes, lifestyles, and environments.
  • Trying to get optimal sleep “may increase anxiety” and make insomnia worse.
  • Don’t buy into the idea that we should “sleep through the night” without ever waking up.
  • Train your body to tell you how much sleep it needs by making you sleepy at the right time in the night, and don’t resist these signals that you need to sleep.
  • Sleeping and waking up “at the times your body prefers,” as everyone has a pattern of being sleepy and alert at certain times during the day.
  • Don’t go to bed unless you’re sleepy, because if you don’t need sleep, your brain will ruminate what keeps it busy, at a time when we don’t have an “on and off switch for the brain.”
  • If you’re trying to sleep, and there’s a stressful issue to think about, try directing your thoughts and worries in another direction.
  • Sometimes it can be helpful to try reading or listening to a podcast that takes your mind off troubling thoughts.
