For a month, the UAE is exposed to a “strange” phenomenon

Southern areas in the Emirates are exposed to the phenomenon of “no shadow of noon”, during the period from June 6 to July 7.

According to the Emirates Astronomy Society, this phenomenon comes due to the perpendicularity of the sun to the latitudes in these regions, where the Tropic of Cancer cuts across the southern parts of the country, according to the official news agency.وام“.

Other regions of the Emirates will witness the shortest shadow of the meridian or noon during the year during this period.

What is the absence of noon shadow?

Ibrahim Al-Jarwan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Astronomy Society, a member of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences, said that the absence of the shadow of the meridian will be with the time of noon, around 12:25 pm, UAE time, and therefore no shadow of people or buildings is seen during the noon time.

Why does the phenomenon occur?

Al-Jarwan indicated that the first perpendicularity of the midday sun will be in the far south of the Emirates on June 6, near the Umm al-Zamoul area, and then the perpendicular area will creep to the north near Madinat Zayed with the date of the summer solstice on June 21.

He continued, “Then it returns towards the south near Umm al-Zamoul on July 8, and after July 10, the perpendicular site moves to the south, and the shadow of the meridian begins to stretch.”

And the sun perpendicular to the Tropic of Cancer around June 21, which is accompanied by the lowest shadow of the demise throughout the northern part of the earth and the shortest night and longest day in the northern part of the earth, according to “WAM.”

As the sun passes perpendicular to the Tropic of Capricorn, around December 21, it is accompanied by the maximum meridian shadow throughout the northern part of the Earth, and the shortest day and longest night in the northern part of the Earth.

While perpendicular to the equator during the spring equinoxes on March 21 and autumn on September 23, and the inclination of the meridian shadow is equivalent to the latitude of the site coinciding with the equanimity of day and night.

It is noteworthy that the areas located between the Tropic of Cancer at 23.5 north, part of which falls within the southern regions of the Emirates, and the Tropic of Capricorn at 23.5 south, the sun perpendicular to it at two dates during the year and differs from one region to another according to the latitude of the site, according to a “WAM” statement.
