Considered to be the canton’s first nursing home, the former Duc de Sassel asylum has become a state-of-the-art medical psychosocial establishment.

When he arrived at the “Pension Duc” nearly 30 years ago, Peter Hadorn slept in a five-bed room. He now enjoys his private space.

“Here, it was the stable in the past. It has become a modern kitchen, where everything is adapted and which is open so that the inhabitants can come, as in the past. At the time, you had to work with an old vegetable garden.” For almost 30 years, Antoinette Pizzirusso has been a cook at the “Pension Duc” in Sassel, a village merged into the commune of Valbroye. Opened in 1929 and reserved for men, often country servants, this kind of old shared apartment for seniors has been rebuilt from top to bottom. It is officially inaugurated this Thursday by State Councilor Rebecca Ruiz.
