For the first time in history, Linux surpasses macOS on Steam

By now, everyone knows that macOS isn’t the best platform in the world for gamers. Compared to Windows, Apple’s system has far less support from developers, who tend to prefer the greater flexibility offered by the Microsoft option. Even so, over the last few years, Apple has managed to secure a comfortable second place — a situation that, according to Valve, may be about to change.

I say this because the developer shared this week a census with the operating systems most used by Steam users, its platform for distributing games for computers. According to data from the creator of classics such as Half-Life and Portal, for the first time in history, Linux computer users surpassed those with macOS in the service, which continues to be dominated by Windows PCs.

More specifically, 96.21% of Valve’s platform users use Windows to access and install their games. Linux (and its various versions) is close behind, being present on 1.96% of all computers used to access the application — a growth of 0.52%.

macOS, in turn, is now in third place, with a share of 1.84% of players. Of those, 0.62% access Steam through macOS Ventura 13.4.1, which is followed by macOS 13.4. The oldest OS version featured on the list is macOS 10.15.7, which represents 0.07% of all Macs.

A possible explanation for this boom of Linux users is Steam Deck, Valve’s portable console that has been selling relatively well and runs SteamOS, which is nothing more than a modified version of the operating system. Launched in early 2022, Steam Deck already accounts for 42% of all Linux users on the platform.

Would the latest innovations in terms of Apple games be able to reverse this situation? Let’s wait…
