While Saturday March 4 will mark World Obesity Day, Muriel Bismuth, suffering from this disease dangerous to health, testifies to the daily difficulties she endures, and to the sometimes cruel gaze of others.

At 58, Muriel Bismuth suffers from severe obesity. For her, everyday life is complicated. “It’s a disability, I’m considered a disabled person. Even to make a meal at home, for any average person, it’s easy. For me, it’s complicated”, she testifies. A problem she encountered from childhood, at the age of 3. “I’ve been doing this all my life, actually: losing, getting back, losing, getting back…“She now weighs 140 kg.

Precarious health

“On the paternal side, we are all very overweight. They are deceased”, continues Muriel. What makes her suffer the most is the gaze of others. “Just yesterday, two boys in their car started laughing. I opened my window, I asked them what was up. They were like, ‘Well, you’re fat.'” His illness puts him at risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, in particular.
