Foreign language Oscar and Golden Lion in Venice for one of the most emotionally rich, scripturally courageous and cinematically moving coming-of-age stories.

As Christos Mitsis notes: “Seventy years later, “Forbidden Games” still remains a revealing cinematic portrayal of the unique power that children have through the purity of their souls to turn darkness into light.

Six decades have passed, yet the top film in René Clément’s filmography (“The Battle of the Railroads,” “Naked in the Sun”) remains impressively ageless. In her time, she caused a lot of controversy, shocking with the innocent sensitivity with which she dealt with the taboo of childhood innocence. How can this be contrasted with the horrors of war?

The answer lies in the story of a little girl whose parents are killed in an air raid as the Nazis advance into France. She is adopted by a poor peasant family and develops a special friendship with their youngest son. Their “forbidden” games (the creation of an animal cemetery) evolve into one of the most emotionally rich, scripturally courageous and cinematically moving bittersweet coming-of-age stories, which won the foreign-language Oscar and the Golden Lion in Venice.”
