In an effort to make F1 more open to the media and fans, the FIA introduced a series of procedures last year to increase transparency of the technical innovations introduced by each team.

As part of the revised sporting regulations, teams have to notify the FIA before each grand prix of any new “significant aerodynamic or bodywork components or assemblies” that they intend to use.

But in addition to having to explain in writing what they have done, the regulation also obliges them to show these pieces before the start of training free.

During a designated window before FP1 on Friday, teams are supposed to make their cars available to the media in a pre-designated area, where the new specifications can be seen in detail.

However, the teams discovered a clever trick with which they avoided showing their designs more than necessary, and that was put into practice in 2022.

The trick is the following: the new parts were assembled in one of the cars, which was the one that remained in the box, showing the media the standard version.

This practice was against the spirit of the regulations, and the FIA has duly responded for the 2023 season.

In the revised regulations, published before the first race in Bahrain, the FIA has made it clear that the teams must assemble the last parts in the car that is shown to the public.

The new regulation establishes: “If the pieces are only going to be mounted on a car and it is intended to drive with it in the race, it must be the one that is shown to the media.”

In addition to forcing teams to explain developments on their cars, the FIA has also taken steps to ensure greater visibility as it relates to power unit development.

The sports regulations now requires each car manufacturer to hold a briefing once a year to discuss their engine.

“Each registered motorcyclist must be available in at least one race per season to offer a presentation to the media of a minimum duration of 30 minutes,” the regulation establishes.
