On the 16th, a part of Gongsanseong Fortress (Historic Site No. 12) in Geumseong-dong, Gongju-si, Chungcheongnam-do collapsed while damage continued due to torrential rain that fell in Chungcheong and Gyeongbuk over the past three days. A heavy rain warning has been in effect since 4 am on the 14th in Gongju. yunhap news.

By Tuesday, the 18th, a forecast came out that more heavy rain of up to 300 mm or more is expected to fall in the inland areas of Chungcheong, Jeonbuk, and northern Gyeongbuk.

The Korea Meteorological Administration predicted in an occasional briefing held on the morning of the 16th that by the 18th, 100 to 250 mm of rain is expected in the mountains of Chungcheong, Jeolla, Gyeongsang, and Jeju Island. There may be places where more than 300mm of rain pours in the Chungcheong, Jeonbuk, and northern Gyeongbuk regions. During the same period, it is expected that 20 to 60 mm of rain will fall in the Gangwon region, excluding Seoul, Incheon, northern Gyeonggi, and southern inland and mountainous areas.

The Korea Meteorological Administration predicts that the static front, which is currently moving north at a slow pace, will stay in one area for a long time and pour very heavy rain. In particular, strong rain of 30 to 60 mm per hour will be concentrated in the Jeonnam and Gyeongnam regions until dawn on the 17th and between the morning and afternoon of the 18th. In the Chungcheong, Gyeongbuk, and Jeonbuk areas, it will rain 30 to 60 mm per hour between the morning of the 17th and the morning of the 18th. On the 18th, in some of these areas, there may be places where it rains around 80 mm per hour. In Jeju Island, it will rain 30 to 80 mm per hour on the 18th, and there may be places where it rains more than 100 mm in mountainous areas.

The heavy rain of 80 mm per hour far exceeds the level of ‘very heavy rain’, which the Korea Meteorological Administration describes as rain with a precipitation of 30 mm or more per hour. If the accumulated precipitation for one hour is more than 50 mm and the accumulated precipitation for three hours is more than 90 mm, it is called ‘extreme heavy rain’.

The Meteorological Administration announced on the 16th that it would rain across the country until the 19th, which is Wednesday, in the mid-term forecast. As the rain cloud belt moves south, it will rain in Jeonnam, Gyeongnam, and Jeju Island on the 20th, and on Jeju Island on the 21st. As the rain cloud band moves north again, it is expected that it will rain throughout the country on Saturday, the 22nd to 24th, and in the central region and Jeonbuk on the 25th and 26th.

The Korea Meteorological Administration urged people to refrain from camping and not to use riverside trails or underpasses as water may suddenly rise downstream due to rain falling in valleys or upstream. In addition, the Korea Meteorological Administration emphasized the need to pay attention to flooding of low-lying areas and farmlands, flooding of rivers and agricultural waterways, backflow of sewage and rainwater pipes, reservoir collapse, river embankment loss, electric shock accidents in flooded areas, facility management and safety accidents caused by gusts.
