Former Rockstar Games technical director Obbe Vermeij believes GTA 6 could reach PC sooner than everyone expects, and artificial intelligence is the reason. AI-developed PC ports and recompilations now pose a real enough threat, he argues, that Rockstar may pull its console and PC releases closer together than the studio’s long-standing pattern of making PC players wait.
Speaking to Rock Paper Shotgun, Vermeij, who was Rockstar’s technical director until his departure in 2009, laid out the case. The timing matters: rumors are already swirling around the game’s launch plans, and most players had accepted they would be waiting until November 2027 at the earliest.
Could AI Ports Bring GTA 6 to PC Sooner?
Vermeij thinks they could.
With AI-developed PC ports and recompilations now appearing online, he told Rock Paper Shotgun, It really has changed the world.
His worry is specific, and it is not hypothetical piracy hand-wringing: I think I would be concerned, if I was Rockstar, that somebody would just take the PS5 version and get AI to change it to PC.
He is clear-eyed about what such a port would look like. An AI-generated approximation, he acknowledged, won’t be as good as their effort.
Quality may not be the point, though. Even the small playerbase of such a port, he argued, could still also hurt their sales.
Hence the possible scramble. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was an effort to get [the releases] a little bit closer together,
Vermeij said. One caveat: he left the studio in 2009, so he does not know Rockstar’s current plans for sure.
Why Rockstar Makes PC Players Wait
The habit runs deep. Back when the series was in its infancy, Vermeij remembers that GTA was primarily built with PC players in mind. So much so that when the PlayStation port was shown to Rockstar, one artist reportedly said, what the fuck did they do to our textures, I can’t believe it, we can’t release this shite.
That attitude changed for GTA 3. Red Dead Redemption’s PC version, for the record, landed a decade and change after its console debut.
Vermeij says there’s still that same mindset
at Rockstar about holding ports back, even though PC gaming is probably the biggest it’s ever been today. I guess it’s less of an argument for them because the game is just so big, so they just kind of always left it that way,
he said. For developers, he added, it’s way easier to just do one version at a time.
Will Rockstar Break Its PC Delay Pattern?
Earlier this year, rumors emerged that Rockstar might break the trend and release GTA 6 on PC before the end of March 2027, well ahead of the November 2027 floor most players had accepted. Word on a PC version probably won’t surface until the console editions ship, though, since Take-Two would presumably be reluctant to forgo the chance to sell the game to players twice.
The tension in one line: an AI port costs Rockstar nothing to make but something to ignore, while a staggered release sells the same game twice. The next real signal will come from Rockstar itself. Until then, the March 2027 rumor stands unconfirmed.
