As a ski racer, he came ninth at the Olympics

After becoming Junior World Champion twice – in 1988 in Madonna di Campiglio in Italy in Super-G and a year later in Alyeska in the USA in giant slalom – Nobis celebrated his debut in the Alpine Skiing World Cup 1991. Injuries and falls during his races repeatedly threw him back over the next few years, so that he was denied the really big hit in the World Cup. Nevertheless, he finished a respectable ninth place in the giant slalom event at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. In 1995 the American ended his career as an alpine skier – for the last time Ricardo Tonetti did the same.

After an alpine career, Nobis became an “icon” in extreme skiing with risky descents

After that, Nobis worked as a ski trainer. In the years that followed, however, he caused a stir with his daring off-piste skiing stunts, and in this context he also appeared in several films in the 2000s. These dangerous maneuvers earned the extreme skier the nicknames “Psycho Nobi” and “The Icon”.

He also mastered several breakneck descents, simply skiing down some of the steepest slopes in the world. Among others, he took on the slope of Pyramid Peak in Alaska, USA, a 2,000 meter high mountain with a 52 degree drop. The Skijournal in a condolence message on Instagram, Nobis called Nobis “one of the most explosive big mountain skiers of all time.”

Ex-ski racer Nobis was recently in prison several times because of alcohol problems

However, he recently got into trouble with the law for driving under the influence of alcohol. Among other things, he destroyed his car under the influence of alcohol in 2019 and appeared loud St. George News from his home country in August 2021 not to a judicial video conference. As a result, he had been temporarily incarcerated in the Iron County Jail since February 2023. After recently pleading guilty, he should have been sentenced on April 25, the US newspaper wrote.

The circumstances of his sudden death are not yet clear. “While no crime is suspected, this incident is under investigation,” Iron County’s Critical Incident Task Force said Wednesday. Nobis is not the first death that the ski community has to cope with this year: in February The former top driver Elena Fanchini has already died.(wuc)
