Former Trump lawyer testifies in classified documents case

Former US President Donald Trump’s attorney testified Friday before a federal grand jury investigating the case of classified documents found in the former White House leader’s Florida mansion.

Sources close to the process told ABC television that today’s hearing of Evan Corcoran lasted more than three hours and took place in the federal court of the capital of the United States.

By law, Corcoran’s testimony before the grand jury is secret, but jurors were expected to ask him about his communications with Trump ahead of the FBI’s search of the Mar-a-Lago mansion last August, where classified documents were found.

A Washington DC appeals court had already asked Corcoran this week to hand over notes, transcripts and any other written documents recording communications with Trump, as part of the investigation into possible errors in the handling of classified documents.

The Justice Department is investigating the handling of thousands of official documents, including nearly 300 classifieds taken from the White House at the end of Trump’s term in January 2021 and found by FBI agents in August during a search of his home. in Mar-a-Lago (Florida).

In the United States, the grand jury is used for particularly controversial issues and its mission is to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to investigate a possible crime.

Alongside the Washington lawsuit, another grand jury in Manhattan is debating whether to press charges against Trump for allegedly paying pornographic actress Stormy Daniels to remain silent about an alleged sexual encounter in 2006.

This payment will have happened in 2016, shortly before the elections that Trump ended up winning.

Trump, seeking the Republican nomination for the 2024 presidential election, said today that the country would face a “catastrophic” situation if he is impeached.
